LEGENDARY MARLS

Abaco Lodge

Abaco is surrounded by more than a thousand square kilometres of productive flats, with the legendary marls on the west side of the island probably being the best known part. Abaco Lodge is centrally located on the marls side of the island and provides access to this highly fisheries area.

The surrounding 30 kilometres have an average water depth of about one metre – bonefish could probably not have a better “backyard” than here. It would take a lifetime to even try to fish all the marlin on your own – but Abaco Lodge also offers the fantastic fishing on the east side of the island.

CHEROKEE SOUND, ROBINSON BAY AND SNAKE CAY

Fishing for bonefish

Cherokee Sound, Robinson Bay and Snake Cay are just minutes from the lodge and offer exceptionally good fishing for bonefish. With this huge selection, it is almost never the case that a day cannot be taken advantage of due to poor weather conditions.
The marlins can be reached directly from the lodge jetty, the flats on the ocean side also after a short drive.

Most of the fishing will be done from the boat, but there is also the option of leaving the boat to wade. A normal session at any one spot on the flats will take between 10 and 45 minutes.

BOAT AND WADE FISHING

Capital fish

Most of the fishing will be done from the boat, but there is also the option of leaving the boat to wade. A normal session at any one spot on the flats will take between 10 and 45 minutes. The bones on the marls have an average weight of one to two kilograms.

But there is always a chance of a bigger fish. The side of the flats to the open sea then offers the opportunity to fish for some of the biggest bones in the Bahamas.

PERMIT, TARPON, CUDAS, JACKS, SHARKS

Big and careful

The biggest are of course also the most cautious! Besides the “turbo fish”, permit, tarpon, ‘cudas, jacks and sharks can also be fished on the flats. So when packing your fishing gear, don’t forget the right equipment for these too.

It would be a shame to see a feeding 10-kilogram Permit or a young Tarpon on the flats and not have the right gear at hand!

DEEP SEA FISHING

In addition to fishing the flats, Abaco also offers some legendarily good deep sea fishing. We are happy to arrange a day or two with the best guides to get you hunting for a marlin, swordfish, dorado, wahoo or tuna (depending on the season).

Deep sea fishing can be booked at short notice at the lodge, but the best boat guides are booked up quickly, so you should decide as early as possible. Of course, there are additional costs for this extra fishing.

Usually there is no fishing on the day of arrival and departure, but if your flight allows it, we can organize a program for half a day. Breakfast is from seven o’clock. We then leave the pier around eight and come back between four and five o’clock. This schedule can be adapted to your needs and wishes if you let us know in advance. Your guide will keep picnic and lunch as well as cold drinks in a refrigerator on board the boat during the fishing.

The Marls can be reached directly from the lodge pier, the flats on the sea side also after a short drive. All boats are equipped with padded seats with backrests and a metal railing on the front part of the boat.

Fishing equipment:

The lodge offers one of the largest selection of fishing tackle in the Bahamas, but we recommend that you bring your own basic equipment, but purchase the appropriate flies at the lodge. They have a large selection of catchy patterns at the lodge that are always available in abundance.

Rods

7-9 wt. Saltwater rods in 9’

Reels

High-quality aluminum reels with a disc drag brake system and a capacity of at least 180 meters backing.

Lines

Saltwater Lines in floating and with a 9’ clear intermediate tip.

Flies

Most common bonefish flies in tan and pink work very well here. We recommend bringing the main fly patterns in different sizes and with different weighting. Gotcha, Bunny Gotcha, Deep Water Gotcha, Pink Puff, Vevrka’s Mantis Shrimp, Puglisi’s Spawning Shrimp, Miheve’s Flats Fly, Big Bone Daddy, Bone Wigglers, Crazy Charlie’s, Simran’s, to name a few.

Leaders

Leaders 10-12’feet with 15lb (~3+ metres with a 7kg tip) carrying capacity made from fluorocarbon. We recommend changing the leader once a day. If you want to add a tippet to the pulled leader, bring fluorocarbon 10-20lb (5-10kg).

Clothing

Long-sleeved fishing shirts and trousers suitable for tropical fishing along with a good hat, flat shoes and plenty of sunscreen make good gear.

Sunglasses

Probably the most underrated piece of equipment. Fishing for bones is a real challenge for high quality polarised sunglasses with tint in amber.
