Description

The Test Valley is one of the best-kept secrets in Hampshire, nestled between Winchester, Salisbury and the New Forest, and only an hour's drive from London. The area is characterised by its wonderful countryside, attractive villages, the famous River Test and bustling market towns of Andover, Stockbridge and Romsey.

The River Test is regarded as the most famous chalk stream in the United Kingdom. Physically it is the longest, being 39 miles from source to estuary and flows through some beautiful countryside from its source in the hamlet of Ashe to the sea at Southampton.

The river is said to be the home of modern fly-fishing and it is high quality game fisheries that have made the River Test justifiably famous. Its chalk water and abundance of weeds are ideal for trout and grayling.

Situation

The village of Timsbury is situated beside the River Test between Romsey and Stockbridge. The Timsbury 5 beat is mid to lower stretch of the main river Test with an idyllic chalkstream carrier.

The Fishery

The Timsbury 5 Beat has just under half a mile of main river fishing and 370 yards of carrier, which is catch and release. The main river has a moderate flow rate with shallows and deep runs. It has good aquatic fly with a good mayfly and prolific sedge hatches later in the summer. This beat can accommodate up to 5 rods and can be booked exclusively with a guide.

The Fishing

You will find a big numbers of brown trout and rainbow trout in this beat. There is also a abundance of Grayling. The fishing is for brown trout using up-stream dry fly and nymph.

The Season

The trout fishing season runs from the 1st May to the 30th October. The best, most famous and also most expensive time of the year is the mayfly season from 15th May - 8th June. But don't worry, the fishing earlier and later during the season is cheaper and is still exceptional.
