TARPON, BONEFISH, PERMIT AND JACKS

The fishing

At the beginning of the season, from November to January, the fishing for bonefish (including very large specimens) is very good on the flats and in the mangrove areas. Fishing for tarpon and other species can also be excellent.

This is a really nice time to travel to Cayo Largo because the weather in Cuba is much warmer than in Europe or North America. The peak fishing season is from February to June. During this time all species of fish can be found in the area. Tarpon, bonefish, permit and jacks can all be fished with success during this time.

Cayo Largo is the south central region of the Cuban archipelago and is one of the last practically untouched ecosystems of this planet with 27 km of fine white sand beach, the surrounding ocean produces a spectacular kaleidoscope of colors, from incredible shades of ocean blue, to the stunning pastel colors of turquoise and green. When you arrive in Cayo Largo, you will be surprised to find here a natural refuge that has hardly changed during the last 1000 years.

The seascape around the coral reefs that connect the chain of islands around Cayo Largo like an underwater bridge is an incredible sight. You will find all the popular underwater sports on this island. Scuba divers are surprised by the explosion of colors in this underwater world.

Cayo Largo owes its name to its elongated shape. Around 1494, Admiral Christopher Columbus stopped here briefly during his second voyage to Cuba. The name also recalls the large group of pirates who made the Caribbean sea unsafe here.

The richness of nature found in Cayo Largo is a well-kept secret. There are untouched coral reefs and on the surrounding neighboring islands exist numerous species of flora and fauna, among them the iguanas, pelicans and turtles.

The climate is warmer than in the Bahamas, with an average temperature of 23.6 °C in January. These pleasant weather conditions during the winter months are ideally suited for fly fishing on the flats of Cayo Largo. August, with an average temperature of 28.2 °C, is the hottest month in Cuba. Without exception, there is always a pleasant breeze blowing from the sea and sometimes you can experience stronger winds. The fishing season lasts from November to August and in this way the hurricane period during September and October is avoided.

Migrating Tarpon, up to 80 or 100 pounds (average weight 15-30 pounds) are encountered regularly and opportunities on Permit are ongoing. Our peak season is the best time to attempt the Grand Slam. Numerous Grand Slams are achieved each season and there are even a few Super Grand Slams (Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit and Snook).

Based on the experience of our partners and great fishing results in the area, this fragile ecosystem is continuously protected. Together with their biologists and marine biologists, they have decided to make Cayo Largo a “fly only” destination.

In the later part of the season the weather gets warmer, but the fishing continues to be productive, especially for Tarpon and Permit. Fishing for Bonefish is also very good, especially during the morning and evening hours. The statistics reveal a very surprising summer phenomenon: the same number of fish as in the peak season are caught during the hot months, but by only half of the rods! This clearly illustrates how fabulously productive the summer months in Cayo Largo can be for fly fishermen.
