QUEEN’S GARDENS

Jardines de la Reina

Christopher Columbus called this place “The Queen’s Garden”. The Jardines de la Reina is a collection of islands stretching over more than 160 km on the southeast side of Cuba. Most of the fishing grounds lie 60-80 km off the coast and enjoy the status of a national park. Thus, there is no commercial fishing in this exclusive area. This is the largest, virtually untouched flats area in the world.

SNAPPER, WAHOO, GIANT CUBERA SNAPPER

Variety of fish species

Hundreds of kilometers of the best flats await you and the incredible thing is that in many places in this area only a few people have ever hooked the fish before. The average bonefish weighs between three and five pounds, but you’ll have the chance to hook fish between seven and ten pounds every day.

Another big plus is the variety of different fish species. That’s because you’ll find snapper on the flats, wahoo and giant cubera snapper on the steeply sloping edges, among others.

BABY TARPON UP TO 40 POUNDS

Wadeable sand flats in Jardines de la Reina

The flats here are a great combination of wadeable sand flats and flats with turtle grass, which you will fish from the boat. There are a lot of “baby tarpon” between 10 and 40 pounds in the channels. On the flats the average weight rises to 45-80 pounds, but fish from 120-130 pounds are also waiting for the fly fisherman in the deep channels.

GRAND SLAMS

Tarpon, Permit and Bonefish

For those anglers who manage to land a permit, there is an excellent chance of a Grand Slam. This is because both Tarpon and Bonefish can be found at almost any time on any tide. During the last 5 years, a lot of Grand Slams have been caught here on the fly.

Unlike many other destinations, it is up to you when you want to go fishing. The day usually starts with breakfast at 7am and then from 7:45am you will head out to the fishing grounds. Guests can choose to have lunch on the Flats Skiff or on the mother ship. One of the best times to fish is at sunset. It is often calm and you can see the shimmering golden tail fins of the tailing bonefish from a hundred meters away in the golden light of the sunset. This is the time when most lodges stop fishing, but here this productive and beautiful time is used for fishing.

During your stay at Jardines de la Reina, you will be accommodated on one of the big yachts, anchored sheltered from wind and waves. So there’s no need to worry, you won’t get seasick here. Each cabin has its own shower with hot water, toilet and individually adjustable air conditioning. A large air-conditioned dining area overlooking the foredeck and aft deck makes these mother ships a real home from home. The Tortuga can accommodate 14 guests.

Dinner is largely seafood; fresh fish every day, but also lobster and mussels. For those who want something different to eat, there is also chicken and pork. Salads and various fruits are served every day. Desserts like pudding and rum cake are delicious! Drinks include water, mineral water, tonic water, various soft drinks (e.g. Coca Cola), beer, rum and excellent wines.
